After graduating from Nebraska in May, I’ve been through the mill when it comes to applying for jobs. Job boards got me nowhere, and I even attempted some personalized Facebook Ads, which got me some attention but no job leads. I get it. The economy is still pretty bad, and I’ve unfortunately picked some industries that tend to be fairly closed off to newbies. But here are 10 reasons you should want to hire me anyway, and if you’re still not convinced by the end of it, email me and tell me why.
I’m young. I see this as an opportunity rather than a weakness. I’m mold-able. I have just enough experience to have the skills and the knowledge, but I’m not set in my ways. I can learn new tricks. I have a fresh outlook on things and I learn quickly. I’m tech savvy, keep up with the latest trends and I’m focused on my career.
I’m an overachiever. I work hard. When I’m passionate about something, I give it my all. If something is worth doing to me, I will work to show everyone else just how worthwhile it is. I earned top grades my entire academic life, worked hard in every internship I’ve had and I live to exceed your expectations.
I love to learn. I’m curious by nature. I want to know how things work, and why. I spent two years living in Italy, and a semester living in Scotland and traveling around Europe. I embrace diversity. I want to know about the world. I want to know the history and the future. I know that I don’t know everything. Teach me. I also happen to be great at research. If I don’t know an answer, I know how to find it. I’ve been referred to as a “Google Master” on more than one occasion.
I’ve got thick skin. After one semester in a grueling creative strategies class with a professor who was all about pushing ideas to the next level, I can take criticism. In fact, I thrive on it. Criticism makes me better. Part of being creative is going where people haven’t gone before, and I’m not afraid to do that. I can handle failure and use it to find success.
I follow through. If I say I’ll do something, I’ll do it. I truly believe I’m only as good as my word. My parents learned early on that they didn’t need to harass me about my grades – I cared more about them than they ever could. I know what I’m capable of, and I always want to push that boundary and see if I’m capable of more. If I start something, I’ll finish it.
I’m competitive, but I’m a team player. Two years of Division I soccer will do that to a person. I want to be the best, and I’m willing to work for it. But I know that in the industries I’m interested in, it’s about being part of a team and working together to come up with the best end product possible. I want to be a part of the best team I can, and contribute as much as possible.
I can adapt to change. I’ve been doing it my whole life. Growing up as a Navy brat and moving across the country and the world teaches you to play with the hand you’re dealt. I can make the best out of less-than-ideal situations, and I can learn from every challenge I encounter.
I can do the balancing act. I’ve juggled more than full-time schedules with jobs, internships and student organizations and I’ve excelled in all aspects. I have no problem balancing different projects with different deadlines. I’m organized and I know how to prioritize, and I’m not afraid of tackling administrative tasks.
I’m versatile. I have a lot of hobbies and interests. I love photography, cooking, designing, editing, traveling, reading, writing, sports, et cetera. I’ve got a lot of skills in a lot of areas that can be put to good use in a magazine setting.
I’m a stickler for details. I’ve been an editor for high school and college newspapers and an online magazine and I was once voted “Grammar Nazi.” I’m thorough. I will comb through everything that passes my desk for errors. I keep exact schedules. I know how to be efficient and meticulous.
